TAN (Tax collection Account number)

Tax Deduction Account Number or Tax Collection Account Number is a 10 -digit alpha-numeric number issued by the Income-tax Department. TAN is to be obtained by all persons who are responsible for deducting tax at source (TDS) or who are required to collect tax at source (TCS).

Applicability

TAN should be obtained by every person responsible for Tax Deduction at Source (TDS) or Tax Collection at Source (TCS). It is mandatory to quote TAN in all TCS or TDS transactions, including any e-TCS/TDS return, TDS/TCS payment challan and TDS/TCS certificates.

TAN Application Process

Through posting the acknowledgement to NSDL or DSC

  1. Visit tan application page on NSDL website.
  2. Fill the online form and submit.
  3. On submission, the applicant will receive an acknowledgement number.
  4. Print the acknowledgement number and send it to the NSDL office at Pune.
  5. The required fees can be paid online or through a demand draft or cheque.
  6. The applicant can file the application through DSC, in which case it is not required to send the acknowledgement number through post to NSDL office.

Once the IT department receives the TAN application, they will verify the details and issue the TAN of the applicants to NSDL. The NSDL will send the TAN details to the applicant’s address provided in Form 49B or send an email with the TAN details.
