FSSAI License

FSSAI stands for the “FOOD SAFETY AND STANDARDS AUTHORITY OF INDIA”. The FSSAI is responsible for setting standards for food so that there is one body to deal with and no confusion in minds of consumers, traders, manufacturers, and investors.

Food license or FSSAI license is granted to all manufacturers, traders, restaurants carrying out any food business which may involve manufacturing or processing. On applying for FSSAI registration, a unique 14-digit licence number is issued which has to be quoted on all food packages. The licence number is also required even if food products are not packaged.

The licensing and registration procedure and requirements are regulated by Food Safety & Standards (Licensing and Registration of food Business) Regulations, 2011.

There are three levels of registrations as mentioned below based on different criteria as per the concerned food business. Fees payable differs with the levels of registration.

  • Basic Registration (For Petty Food business operators)
  • State Registration
  • Central Registration

Required and Registration Process

Required documents

  • Photograph of the Applicant
  • Government-issued photo identities such as AADHAAR, PAN, Voter ID, etc
  • Proof of Address of Businesses activity (if the address is other than as mentioned in the Photo ID Card)
  • Documents for Renewal/Modification of License
  • Any change in documents or information provided during the grant of the previous food business license.
  • Certificate of Food Safety Management System being adopted
  • Medical fitness certificates of all workers engaged in the firm
  • All details of technical personnel in charge of the operation
  • Documents required for Renewal of Registration/License
  • Any change in documents or information provided during the grant of the previous registration

Registration Process

  • Register on Food Safety and Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal
  • Select the Apply for New License/Registration option
    1. Select the State and Read the Note before proceeding
    2. Read the Group Heads of Kind of Business. Select Restaurant from food services Business Group Head
    3. Choose the right Radio Button according to the turnover of your food business and proceed to fill out the application
    4. Fill in all the mandatory fields as shown in the application Form B
    5. Please furnish the communication details with caution, and communication made by the authority will be done to the mentioned contact details viz Mobile Number or Email ID, etc
    6. Upload the relevant set of documents. Pay the fee with available modes and click on apply.
  • After completing the fee payment, a receipt will be generated with a 17-digit reference number that can be used for future reference.

Registration process for Petty food business operators

  1. Register on Food Safety and Compliance System (FoSCoS) portal as Petty Food Business Operator.
  2. Click on the “Apply for Registration Certificate (Petty Food Business Operators)” option
  3. A new application page will open, provide all details in the application for registration of Petty FBO and submit the application.
